Larry Maggio, Candidate for Area 2 Vice Commander

He was born and raised in San Jose, CA. Larry attended Del Mar High School and was a High School Marching and Jazz Band member. He also played Baseball and was on the Wrestling team. During High School, Larry joined the Campbell Police Department Explorer program, where he excelled in learning different aspects of Law Enforcement. Larry attended West Valley College, studied Administration of Justice, then attended the Police Academy and earned his POST certificate. (peace officer standards and training)

Larry served in the US Army and the California Army National Guard from 1986 to 1996 as a Military Policeman and then as a Military Police Investigator.  He served in several Military Police Operations during the following: Operation Just Cause, Operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm, Operation Green Sweep, and Operation Garden Plot. Larry’s ETS (end of term for service) occurred in 1996 at the rank of Staff Sergeant. Larry started a traffic control business and volunteered as a firefighter for the City of Hollister. In 1999, Larry went to work with Pacific Bell/AT&T and has been employed there for over 25 years. Larry has volunteered to help local youth programs and charities. For many years, Larry managed and coached PONY baseball. He also volunteered several years as a Marshal and Team Captain at the ATT Pro-Am in Pebble Beach, CA. Larry currently serves as the Commander for the 13th District. Serves as the Area 2 Oratorical Commissioner for the last 5 years, co-chairs the Department of California Oratorical Committee for the previous 3 years, and currently is an Advisor to the National Commander on the Conventional Armed Forces Committee.

Larry served as the Sgt at Arms, Adjutant, and then as Post Commander for 5 years for Post 99. Larry also served District 13 as the 2nd Vice Commander for 1 year and 1st Vice Commander for 2 years. As 1st Vice Commander, Larry was also the Area 2 Membership Commissioner. Larry is the current Chairman of the Board for the Campbell Veterans Memorial Foundation and is a Commissioner for the Town of Los Gatos, where he has been the Chairman of the Personnel Board.

In 2019, The United States Army Military Police Corp Regiment awarded SSG Maggio the Order of the Marechaussee Medal, for his 10 years of exemplary service to the Military Police Corp, and the U.S. Army. He is honored to have received five President Volunteer Service Awards from two former U.S. Presidents.

Larry has received numerous certificates of appreciation and commendation certificates from U.S. Congresswoman Ana Eshoo of District 16, former U.S. Congressman Tom Lantos of District 11, California State Senator Dave Cortese of District 15, The Santa Clara County Boards of Supervisors, and several Mayoral recognitions and proclamations.

Larry was selected Veteran of the Year for 2024 by the City of Campbell.

A lifetime member of The American Legion, The 40 and 8, and The Military Police Regimental Association. He is also a long-time member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elk, the Loyal Order of Moose, the Seven Thirty Social Club, the American Legion Past Commanders Club, The Sons of the American Legion, and the American Legion Riders. Larry is a 2022 Graduate of the National American Legion College. Larry continues to volunteer and serve with a devotion to his community, state, and nation living by the motto “Veterans still serving America.” and “No veteran will be left behind”.

Larry is honored to be nominated by Past Department Commander Autrey James at the 2024 Area 2 Spring meeting. The Districts in Area 2 that were present at the Area 2 Spring meeting voted to endorse Larry as the Area 2 Vice Commander for the 2024-2025 year. Larry accepted the nomination. If elected he will continue the mission of the American Legion as your Area 2 Vice Commander and serve our veterans, our communities, our state, and our nation.
