Compensated Work Therapy, or CWT, is a vocational rehabilitation program offered by the VA designed to assist Veterans with mental and physical challenges in obtaining employment and overcoming job-related barriers.
CWT collaborates with businesses, industries, and government agencies to connect Veterans with employment opportunities and provides support to both Veterans and employers. CWT programs are present in VA medical centers nationwide and have established partnerships with various sectors to promote job opportunities for Veterans with health challenges. Many of these programs have received accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities.
Employment plays a significant role in mitigating issues like suicide, homelessness, and substance abuse among Veterans. CWT serves as both a therapeutic and employment initiative, helping Veterans who face obstacles due to mental health or physical disabilities.
CWT offers Veterans an opportunity to acquire essential employment skills through various programs, such as Incentive Therapy, Sheltered Workshop, Transitional Work and Vocational Assistance, Supported Employment, and at some locations, Transitional Residence. These programs focus on vocational assessment, skill development, and integrating Veterans into the civilian workforce with appropriate accommodations and support.
For Veterans struggling to transition from military to civilian life, CWT provides a pathway to regain a sense of purpose and direction. By offering vocational rehabilitation services, CWT contributes to Veterans’ successful reintegration into society and provides them with the tools needed for a hopeful future.
