$17.00 – $20.00 (Hourly)
$1,360.00 – $1,600.00 (Biweekly)
$2,964.67 – $3,466.67 (Monthly)
$35,360.00 – $41,600.00 (Annually)

Position Overview:

As a Veteran Service Officer Trainee, you will play a vital role in assisting the VSO’s with supporting military veterans and their families in accessing the benefits and services they are entitled to. This entry-level position serves as a steppingstone towards becoming a full-fledged Accredited Veteran Service Officer (VSO). You will receive comprehensive training and guidance to develop the necessary skills and knowledge to advocate for veterans and navigate the complex network of veteran support programs.

Essential Functions of the Job:

Employees must be able to:

  • Frequently lift 50 lbs
  • Effectively communicate with customers and fellow employees
  • Work occasional overtime
  • Sit for long periods of time
  • Possess excellent grammar and proofreading skills in order to produce quality and accurate documents
  • Work on many issues simultaneously and be detailed oriented
  • Have manual dexterity when processing various documents and electronic information.
  • Work on display terminals for extended periods of time
  • Type and enter data at a speed necessary for successful job performance
  • Work in and maintain a drug and alcohol-free workplace

Frequently means more than 50% of the workday is engaged in this type of activity.

Job Duties:

Duties include but are not limited to, the following:

1. Training and Skill Development: Your primary focus as a trainee is to undergo an extensive training program to acquire a deep understanding of federal, state, and local laws, policies, and regulations related to veterans’ benefits and services. Develop proficiency in interpreting and applying these regulations to assist veterans effectively and ultimately become an accredited Veteran Service Officer.

2. Assist VSOs with Claims and Applications: Aid veterans in completing and submitting various forms, applications, and claims for benefits, such as disability compensation, pension, education and training, healthcare, housing, and vocational rehabilitation. Provide guidance on required documentation and ensure the timely and accurate submission of claims.

3. As a trainee, you will receive guidance and supervision from experienced SOs as you develop your skills and knowledge in this field. Over time, you will gain more autonomy and responsibility in aiding and support to veterans. You will be eligible for promotion to VSO1 upon meeting requirements of the higher level and maintaining a satisfactory work performance evaluation.

Requirements:

  • Must achieve and maintain Veteran Service Officer Accreditation
  • Prior experience working with veterans, military personnel, or in a related field is highly desirable.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the military system, VA benefits programs, and other relevant resources available to veterans.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills to effectively engage with veterans, their families, and other stakeholders.
  • Excellent organizational and time management abilities to handle multiple cases and prioritize tasks effectively.
  • Empathy, compassion, and sensitivity to the unique needs and challenges faced by veterans.
  • Proficiency in using computer systems, databases, and software for managing case records and generating reports.
  • Familiarity with relevant laws, regulations, and privacy requirements, including HIPAA.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, demonstrating flexibility and adaptability in a fast-paced environment.
  • Be able to pass background check

25-32 HOUR WORK WEEK
