NATIONAL CITY, Calif. — When community leadership calls, American Legion Department of California Historian and Post 255 Commander Liliana Armenta does not just answer, she leads the charge from the front lines.
Surrounded by rows of polished chrome and high-octane horsepower, hundreds gathered inside the showroom of National City Harley-Davidson for the 69th Annual Salute to the Navy Luncheon. Presented by the National City Chamber of Commerce in close partnership with Fleet Week San Diego, the storied annual tradition serves as a centerpiece of civic and military appreciation, honoring the men and women who wear the cloth of the nation.
Behind the seamless execution of this year’s milestone event was Commander Armenta, who served as a key organizing force on the luncheon committee.
Dressed in her distinctive Legion garrison cap and red, white, and blue regalia, Armenta spent the afternoon bridging the worlds of civic enterprise, community leadership, and Veteran advocacy. Under an oversized American flag suspended from the dealership’s industrial steel beams, the gathering recognized numerous active-duty personnel alongside local veterans whose service continues long after hanging up the uniform.

For Commander Armenta, that ethos of enduring service is a lived reality every day. At the helm of American Legion Post 255 in National City, she has worked tirelessly to ensure local veterans find camaraderie, resources, and representation. Simultaneously, in her statewide role as the Department of California Historian, Armenta is tasked with capturing and preserving the legacy of California Legionnaires across generations.
“Liliana embodies the Legion motto of ‘Veterans Strengthening America,'” said fellow Legionnaires in attendance. “Whether she is archiving California’s Legion heritage, supporting Post 255’s neighborhood missions, or sitting at the planning table with civic leaders to honor active service members during Fleet Week, she goes above and beyond without asking for the spotlight.”
The luncheon highlighted naval leadership from surrounding commands, including remarks recognizing the Commanding Officer of Naval Base San Diego, Captain Brian C. Bungay, while underscoring the deep, historic bond between South Bay communities and the maritime forces stationed along its waterfront.
By bringing Post 255 and the American Legion into direct partnership with the chamber, Fleet Week San Diego, and National City Harley-Davidson, Armenta demonstrated that veterans remain an indispensable pillar of community life. Her presence on the committee ensured that both active-duty sailors and seasoned veterans were celebrated with the dignity, respect, and enthusiasm they deserve.
As Fleet Week celebrations continue across San Diego, Commander Armenta’s leadership at the 69th Annual Salute to the Navy stands as a proud reminder of what dedication, community engagement, and Legion spirit can achieve.
