VA Partner Supply and Staffing Shortage Leading to Delayed Mail and Extended Response Deadlines for Some Veterans

The Department of Veterans Affairs announced on Wednesday that it is extending the response period for some veterans that receive letters from the VA between July 13 and Dec. 31, 2021 by 90 days. 

The extension period applies to all “time-limited notifications,” regardless of the selected program or benefits, with exceptions for:

The VA says that claimants, including California veterans, that do not fall into one of the three exceptions will not have their applications or benefits terminated, denied, or reduced during this period. 

The VA says the vendor responsible for the department’s mailing and printing services is experiencing shipping delays and staffing shortages, which is preventing the department from sending out a variety of response letters. While the VA did not cite a specific reason for the vendor’s delay in its announcement, a separate correspondence claims ongoing logistical issues stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic are to blame.

The VA notes that it is actively working with the Government Publishing Office to find a workaround for the mailing delays.
