On May 2, American Legion Riders from District 9 (Antioch), Chapter 202 (Brentwood), District 13 (Santa Clara County) and Chapter 105 (Redwood City) gathered in a church parking lot in the city of Antioch to prepare for a celebration of the 100th birthday of Teresa Conley. Teresa is a longtime member of American Legion Post 161 in Antioch. Teresa served in the United States Navy for three years during World War II and rose to the rank of chief petty officer.
The Riders were called into service of this celebration by the grandsons of Teresa who wanted to find a way to honor her 100th birthday. Also included in this celebration were members of the Antioch Police Department, the East County Fire Department and many of her family and friends who have not been able to visit with her in this Covid-19. Luis Torres, president of District 9 riders said, “it is important to make sure she knows she is part of our veteran family.”
The group formed into a two-block long procession led by a fire engine and drove to Teresa’s home. Teresa, who had no idea what had been planned was in her words “overwhelmed.” Teresa was expecting a quiet breakfast with her daughter and son-in-law but, as she described, her life got a little louder today with wail of sirens, rumble of motorcycles and the honking of horns, as Riders, emergency services personnel and other members of the community rode by in recognition of Teresa’s birthday. As member of Teresa’s post, it was truly an honor to be a part of her 100th birthday celebration and a great way to recognize a member of our greatest generation. Happy birthday, chief.
