Boys State Commission Holds Annual Meeting

The American Legion California Boys State Commission held its annual meeting at Yolo Post 77 in Woodland on November 2. This meeting was the most “historic” in many years.
A review of the 2019 Session discussion was presented by Director Richard Shick and the Boys State Senior Staff. 1005 Delegates attended this year’s session. In addition, 2019 Delegate Brendan Chapko, our 2019 Samsung Scholarship National Finalist, was a Regional Runner-up. Brendan, who was sponsored by Post 8 in San Diego, will receive a $5,000 scholarship. The 1005 Delegates that attended this year, again made the California Boys State Program the 3rd largest in the country behind South Carolina and Texas.
Before beginning the plans for the 2020 Session, Director Shick who this year celebrated 50 years of service on the Boys State Staff, announced his “semi-retirement.” He formally requested that the Commission accept his request to become Director Emeritus, which the Commission unanimously did. The Commission and Department Commander Ed Grimsley again thanked Director Shick for his tremendous service and accomplishments. At his recommendation, the Commission appointed Past Department Commander Gary Leach as the Director.
The Commission approved several changes for 2020 that will benefit the Delegates, sponsoring Posts and Districts:
Session Dates: The 2020 Session will be held beginning June 20, 2020 at California State University, Sacramento.
Delegate Fees: For the first time in at least 40 years, Delegate Fees are being reduced! The 2020 Delegate Fee is $345.00. This is a reduction of $15.00 from 2019.
