American Legion Family Day returns this year on Saturday, April 26, offering an opportunity for local posts to open their doors and welcome community members to celebrate the dedication and service of The American Legion Family. From Legionnaires and Sons of The American Legion to Legion Riders and The American Legion Auxiliary, this day honors the people who support Veterans, their families, and the community year-round.
More than just a celebration, American Legion Family Day brings attention to The Legion’s #BeTheOne initiative, a mission focused on reducing the rate of Veteran suicide and breaking the stigma around asking for help. It’s a nationwide call to action, encouraging open conversations, support, and connection.
Approved by The American Legion National Executive Committee in October 2022 through Resolution No. 7, American Legion Family Day is now observed annually on the last Saturday in April. Local posts across the country are invited to host events and share their celebrations through local media and on legiontown.org, where stories and photos help shine a light on the impact of The Legion Family.
In California, several American Legion posts are planning events that demonstrate their ongoing commitment to Veterans, youth programs, and community involvement. These are just some of the events happening across the state:

Post 741, Camarillo: Doors open at noon for a community gathering that will feature information about youth programs including the Sons of The American Legion, Junior Auxiliary, Boys and Girls State, and scholarship opportunities.

Post 252, Los Angeles: The 2nd Annual Steps for Vets 5K hosted by U.S. VETS will take place at 3833 W. Century Blvd., Inglewood, CA 90303. Registration opens at 7a.m. The American Legion Family Day celebration and fun will continue at Jackie Robinson Post 252, located at 3818 Crenshaw Blvd. #227 in Los Angeles.

Post 216, Corona: From 2 to 5 p.m. at 1024 S. Main St., Suite B, the post will host an open house where visitors can learn more about how The Legion supports Veterans, youth, and the community. The post will also honor a 50-year member. Food and refreshments will be served.

Post 584, Big Bear Lake: Open from noon to 3 p.m., the post will welcome community members with free hot dogs, chips, and drinks while providing information on the Be the One initiative and celebrating the service of The Legion Family.

Post 291, Newport Beach: From 11:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., the post will offer food for purchase including hot dogs, burgers, and spaghetti with meatballs. Attendees can also enjoy live music, harbor cruises, paddleboarding, canoeing, and cornhole games.
American Legion Family Day is more than a day of celebration. It is a reminder of the strength found in community, connection, and continued service.
