Eagle Scout of the Year
2020 Eagle Scout of Year – Michael McPhie
The Dept Scouting Commission, Eagle Scout of the Year selection committee has selected Michael Craig McPhie of Saddleback Valley Post 862, District 29 for this award. Michael is an exceptional young man with highest scholastic honors. He excels in Math, Latin, Music, and Science. His Eagle Scout project was, “I honored veterans in Orange County by collecting their experiences in the form of oral interviews, which I then sent to the Library of Congress. Those interviews have now been archived in Washington D.C., and are part of the Library of Congress Veterans History Project archives, thus enabling current and future generations of Americans to hear directly from these veterans about their war experiences.”
In Section E of the application for this award, Michael described his career interests and/or goals. “My career interest is in Math. I don’t know exactly what I want to do. I want to be what my scoutmasters are, men who do their duty to God and Country. They are busy with their careers, busy raising families, but they take time to lead us on trips to the Grand Canyon and Joshua Tree. Out in nature, they talk about what it means to be American and to live in the greatest land on earth, a land of freedom. They express gratitude for brave Americans who have risked and sacrificed so much.”
As the Department of California 2020 Eagle Scout of the Year, Michael will receive a check for $500, a certificate, and a special American Legion Scouting medal.

Legion & Scouting
The American Legion’s support for Boy Scouts of America began at the Legion’s first national convention in 1919.
Today, Legion posts sponsor more than 2,500 Scouting units across the country. This is natural for Legionnaires, who bring their service-learned skills and experiences as veterans to help build character and positive traits in our country’s youth. Few other post activities generate more goodwill from the community. The Legion annually honors the Eagle Scout of the Year at the national convention. The winner of the national competition receives a $10,000 scholarship, and the three runners-up are each awarded $2,500 scholarships.
