American Legion posts, districts, and departments are encouraged to host Be the One events, such as walks. A new how-to video is available to help you get started.

Newly elected Department of Wisconsin Commander Jim Johnson shares best practices for conducting a Be the One walk, drawing from his experience of leading four within his department. The video covers how to: choose a route, contact law enforcement for safety, advertise in the media, create a sign-up sheet for participants, and use promotional materials like banners, pamphlets, and shirts.

“I’m trying to incorporate exercise to enhance our overall wellness, both physically and mentally,” said Johnson during the Department of Wisconsin’s Be the One 2.2 walk on July 11. “It breaks the stigma of us just sitting in a bar. It gets us out into the community, shows people what we’re doing, and brings everyone together to raise awareness about suicide.”

The American Legion’s Be the One initiative aims to reduce Veteran suicide rates, eliminate the stigma around seeking help, and encourage Legion Family members and others to reach out when a Veteran is in crisis. Legionnaires can find a variety of resources to support this mission at betheone.org/resources.

Additional resources available on betheone.org/resources include a sample media advisory and press release, a sample speech, social media graphics, and a table banner.
