San Diego American Legion Baseball

From the 1940s to the early 1990s, American Legion Baseball was once a summertime tradition, particularly in San Diego. However, the program gradually declined and remained inactive for over thirty years, until Peter-Rolf Ohnstad, Commander of San Dieguito American Legion Post 416, took the initiative to assemble a committee to revive the league.

Despite setbacks from the COVID-19 pandemic, American Legion baseball has flourished into a 12-team program designed to support high school athletes who may struggle with the financial demands of travel baseball.

Peter-Rolf Ohnstad, a retired Navy pilot and Baseball Commissioner for District 22, enlisted the help of former CIF San Diego Section Commissioner Dennis Ackerman to assist in a fundraising effort. Ackerman’s familial ties to Legion baseball, through his father’s influential role in the Claremont area and recent induction into the California American Legion Baseball Hall of Fame, further fueled his commitment to the cause.

“American Legion Baseball is something that has been in my family and is close to my heart,” said Ackerman. “I’ve been involved on the fringes here for a few years, but when Peter-Rolf asked for more help, I jumped in.”

Running the summer league for players aged 19 and under presents a substantial financial burden, exceeding $45,000 in total expenses. Umpire fees constitute the primary cost, surpassing $23,000, followed by expenses for uniforms, baseballs, and insurance. Additionally, San Diego American Legion posts host the RADM Shelton Memorial Invitational from June 26-29, featuring teams like the Yakima Beatles and Newport Beach Mariners.

Despite these financial challenges, Ohnstad stated the program’s commitment to providing players with opportunities without imposing financial burdens. Yet, sustaining the program’s operations poses challenges, with some sponsoring Legion Posts struggling to secure adequate funding.

Ohnstad asks for financial support from the community to help ensure the program’s success, urging individuals passionate about baseball to contribute, regardless of the donation size.
