Time is running out to take advantage of a special enrollment period that allows some combat Veterans to directly access VA healthcare without the need to apply for VA benefits beforehand.
The PACT Act, which expanded benefits for Veterans exposed to toxic substances during their service, offers a new chance for combat Veterans to enroll in VA healthcare without the need to apply for benefits first if they have not previously applied for the program. The deadline for enrollment is fast approaching, with September 30 as the cutoff date. After September 30, income will become a factor for eligibility rather than solely relying on service connection.
The special open enrollment opportunity under the PACT Act is designed to streamline the process of obtaining healthcare services for Veterans who served in a combat zone and left the military between September 11, 2001, and October 1, 2013. It’s a chance to ensure that Veterans receive the care they may require, even if they are uncertain about their eligibility.
Veterans who enroll in VA health care gain access to top-notch, all-encompassing healthcare services. This includes annual check-ups, health assessments, no-cost screenings, specialized care tailored to military-related concerns, and much more. Importantly, these benefits are available to whether or not Veterans have a service-connected condition. VA healthcare can serve as a primary healthcare provider or complement other existing plans. Additionally, it’s flexible and portable, ensuring Veterans receive care even if participants travel or relocate.
This deadline is specific to a particular group of Veterans, but other opportunities remain available for Veterans with different circumstances. Once access is approved, it’s granted for life.
