On March 15, The American Legion will turn 105. To mark this occasion, Legion posts nationwide are planning special events and gatherings. However, this year’s celebrations hold an added dimension: a focus on Buddy Checks.
Buddy Checks are a cornerstone of the Legion’s commitment to camaraderie and support within the community. American Legion Resolution No. 18 calls for Buddy Checks to be conducted twice a year, on The Legion’s birthday and on Veterans Day, although they can be conducted at any time throughout the year by Legion posts.
As preparations for The Legion’s birthday unfold, engaging in Buddy Checks serves as a fitting way to celebrate. To amplify the message of what The Legion represents, both internally and within the broader community, The American Legion Headquarters has created a speech tailored for its 105th birthday. The speech, although provided as a template, is intended for customization by Legionnaires to suit their preferences and audience.

Buddy Checks are a way to reach out to members and Veterans within the community who may require assistance or support, as well as to extend support from local Legion posts. The welfare checks serve as a platform for offering various forms of aid, including financial assistance, transportation, service officer guidance, or simply providing emotional support through a phone call.
Resources, such as a toolkits and door hangers, have been developed to help in the execution of Buddy Checks. These materials can be accessed and downloaded from legion.org/buddycheck. Included within the toolkit are guidelines detailing the Buddy Check process, sample scripts, and additional resources. A printer-friendly door hanger can be personalized and left behind during visits to Veterans’ residences.
Legionnaires are encouraged to share their stories of celebrations, experiences, and insights from conducting Buddy Checks on The Legion Birthday on legiontown.org.
