A gathering occurred at Liberty Station a week ago, where many eras of Veterans were recognized by Honor Flight San Diego, a non-profit organization that arranges trips to Washington, D.C., for San Diego County Veterans.
Over 225 local Veterans attended, marking the 78th anniversary of World War II’s end, the 70th anniversary of the Korean War’s conclusion, and the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War’s end.
Named the “Spirit of ’45,” this annual event pays homage to the day President Truman declared Victory in World War II. Individuals ranging from 99 to 103 years old were present at the event, serving as a reminder of Veterans’ sacrifices and instilling gratitude among the younger attendees. The event achieved unity and gratitude, with conversations and shared stories fostering connections.
Veterans like Tom Crosby, who endured years in a Philippines prison camp during WWII, participated, emphasizing the chance to share stories and connect. Albert Breland, a Vietnam War Veteran, summarized the event’s spirit, “We all have something in common. There’s nothing like being with Veterans.” Max Gurney, a 102-year-old World War II veteran, stated, “I’m here for the ones who didn’t come back.”
The next Honor Flight trip departing from San Diego to Washington, D.C. is scheduled for the end of September. Honor Flight San Diego is gathering letters and cards of gratitude for the Veterans going on this trip.
