The Department of California Oratorical Finals is an exciting event. High school students from across the state have prepared their speeches on the US Constitution and won at their respective district and area competitions. They will now compete against the winners from the other five areas at the Department of California Competition.

This year the department finals will be live streamed from Post 147 in Clovis using Microsoft Teams. Up to 250 Legion Family members will be able to watch the event.

The Area winners who compete in the Department of California Finals will receive: 

    • Winner – $1,200
    • 2nd place – $1,000
    • The 4 Runner-Ups – $700

The Top Three Winners National Oratorical Contest
will receive scholarships in the amount of:

    • First place will receive $25,000;
    • Second place will receive $22,500; and
    • Third place will receive $20,000.

The American Legion through the national office awards the scholarships, which can be used at any college or university in the United States.

Jared is the senior editor and web team lead for the Department of California and chair of its Media & Communications Commission. He became a member of the American Legion in 2014 when he joined Palisades Post 283 to find stories about veterans issues for a local newspaper while working as its news editor. He was soon brought in as 283's assistant adjutant and historian to help produce the post's award-winning community newspaper. Since then, Jared has used his media skills to help further the efforts of The American Legion in its advocacy of veterans and their families. Jared has also worked for several years to help revitalize the 100-year-old Santa Monica Post 123, formerly as its adjutant and as a member of its executive board, before transferring back to Post 283.
