Thousands of Veterans and Legion Family members will come together Aug. 22–28 for The American Legion’s 106th National Convention at the Tampa Convention Center. This year’s exhibit hall will look a little different. American Legion Gaming, in partnership with Consumer Cellular, is introducing a Lounge & Gaming area designed for camaraderie, competition, and fun. The space will feature PC gaming alongside vintage classics like Atari, all free to attendees, with daily challenges, tournaments, giveaways, and special guest appearances.
The California Legionnaire interviewed our own Senior Editor, Jared Morgan, a Marine Corps Veteran, Iraq War Veteran, and Executive Director of American Legion Gaming.
“The American Legion has always evolved to meet the needs of its members,” Morgan said. “Gaming is the next step — a powerful, modern way to grow our ranks and strengthen our impact.”
The lounge will be open in West Hall on the third floor of the Tampa Convention Center from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Aug. 22, 23, and 25, and from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Aug. 24 and 26. Inside, visitors can expect everything from a scavenger hunt to free play on consoles and arcade machines, as well as contests like Best Golf Putt, Best Racing Time, and Best Pinball Score.
“Gaming gives Veterans and Service Members a sense of comfort and belonging,” Morgan said. “It is a safe space where they can decompress, connect, and find common ground with others who understand their journey.”
Highlights throughout the week include trivia and giveaways hosted by Consumer Cellular, guest appearances by Austin von Letkemann of @Mandatory Fun Day, and mini tournaments that give attendees quick opportunities to compete for prizes. Public entry is scheduled for Aug. 23 with a booth photo op, and the Scavenger Hunt grand prize will be awarded Aug. 26.
For Jared, the gaming lounge is about more than playing a few rounds of pinball or testing racing skills on a simulator. “American Legion Gaming is building bridges across generations,” he said. “Whether you’re a young Service Member or a seasoned Veteran, gaming is the common language that brings us together.”
He added that the lounge represents a blend of tradition and innovation that matches the spirit of the convention. “Our video game activations are more than booths and consoles. They’re living proof that when you combine tradition with innovation, you create experiences that resonate with today’s Veterans.”
American Legion Gaming has a dedicated website, and convention attendees are encouraged to download the official Legion National Convention app for full schedules and updates.
