California, home to nearly 163,000 women who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces, recently took a significant step forward in recognizing and honoring the contributions of Women Veterans by introducing a new license plate option.

The new California license plate option for Women Veterans is decorated with a decal that embodies the strength and patriotism of women in the Armed Forces. By proudly displaying this decal, Women Veterans can share their stories and inspire others.

Jan Kays, an Air Force and Vietnam Veteran from Santa Barbara, designed the decal, aiming to convey a clear message of strength, Women, and America. The decal features the silhouette of a female servicemember saluting, placed within an Old Glory star shaded with the American flag. It is a visual representation of the sacrifices and contributions made by women in the military.

For many years, the contributions of women in the military were not officially recognized. On June 12, 1948, this changed when the Women’s Armed Services Integration Act was signed into law, granting women the opportunity to serve as permanent, regular members of the American military. Since then, women have played vital roles in every war, although their recognition as Veterans and access to benefits took time.

The nonprofit Foundation for Women Warriors played a crucial role in making the designated license plate available for California Service Women. Nearly two years ago, they proposed the idea to the California Department of Veterans Affairs, which subsequently approved and collaborated with the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) for final approval and production of the decal.

California’s decision to offer the Woman Veteran decal on the “Honoring Veterans” license plate aligns with the 75th anniversary of the Women’s Armed Services Integration Act. It serves as a celebration of the fight for equal opportunities for women who have served their country. California is among the 18 states that currently provide plates, decals, or tags honoring Women Veterans, demonstrating a collective effort to ensure their recognition.

The original purchase of the specialty plate costs $50, with an annual renewal fee of $40. The decal is included in the initial fee, and replacement decals are available for $10. All proceeds from the sales of this plate contribute to expanding Veteran services throughout the state.

To obtain the “Honoring Veterans” license plate with the Woman Veteran decal, interested individuals can visit the California DMV’s Specialized License Plate webpage here.
