David Brambila, Department Commander

We just concluded our 106 Department Convention. This was a powerful reminder of who we are and what we stand for: service, unity, and unwavering patriotism. Veterans from every branch and generation came together to share in fellowship, honor our sacrifices, and chart a course forward for our organization and our mission.

As your new Commander of the American Legion Department of California, I have been deeply moved and inspired by the dedication I’ve seen across our great state the past eight months. In that time, I visited 80 of our individual posts, attended all 6 Areas, most Districts and made over 325 calls to our 400 commanders. I sent out over 500 texts and mailed out over 1000 pieces of mail to reach our veterans. These conversations and visits have reaffirmed one simple truth—our strength is in our people. The passion, pride, and perseverance I’ve witnessed in every corner of California are the foundation of everything we do.

The convention itself was filled with energy and unity. Veterans shared their stories, honored the fallen, and supported one another through meaningful training workshops, ceremonies, and informal moments of connection. Patriotism echoed in every room—from the colors flying high to the voices lifted during the national anthem. We celebrated not only our past, but our continued purpose.

Most importantly, we reignited a positive spirit that must continue well beyond this gathering. The camaraderie, optimism, and sense of mission we all felt at the convention must become the standard we carry forward every day. We cannot allow ourselves to be distracted by negativity or divided by noise. Our mission is too important. We must stay focused, stay united, and keep moving forward—together.

This is our time to lead with integrity, to support one another fully, and to show the next generation of veterans what true service looks like. I am honored and humbled to stand with you as your Commander. Let’s build on this momentum and make this year one of unity, strength, and lasting impact—for our Legion, for our veterans, and for our nation.
