For the second consecutive year, Delta Air Lines organized a special charter flight for over 40 World War II Veterans to Normandy, France to participate in the 79th annual commemoration of the D-Day Invasion. Last year, Delta made history by becoming the first U.S. passenger airline to touch down in Deauville, France to bring WWII veterans back to the site for D-Day commemorations.
This year, additional support was provided to the Veterans on their journey. Several employees, who are part of the airline’s Veteran Business Resource Group, underwent special training through the Best Defense Foundation to serve as primary care providers. Each volunteer was paired with a Veteran to ensure individual personalized support throughout the journey.
Prior to departure, a gate event was held to pay tribute to the Veterans, who were then escorted through an airport processional accompanied by the Dutchtown High School marching band. The Veterans were treated to a memorable performance by the marching band, followed by an honor guard ceremony.
Returning to Normandy for the 78th anniversary of D-Day holds great significance for the World War II veterans, many of whom are in their mid-90s. This marks their first return to France since the historic Normandy landings on June 6, 1944, which played a pivotal role in turning the tide of World War II in favor of the Allies.
The partnership between Delta Air Lines, Best Defense Foundation, and Michelin allows these Veterans to participate in a week-long program of remembrance and special events in Normandy. The Veterans will receive the French Légion d’honneur, the highest French order of merit, and participate in parades and commemorative activities.
This program serves as a tribute to the Veterans’ service and sacrifice, reinforcing the enduring bond between nations and the shared commitment to freedom and remembrance.
