Google has officially launched its new Serving Veterans resource hub, which aims to help veterans struggling with mental illness find assistance. The hub provides a variety of resource locator tools for veterans, their families, as well as allies and supporters.

Among the voices contributing to Google’s Serving Veterans are retired Army Generals Peter Chiarelli and Joseph Votel and retired Navy Adm. William McRaven. Google says among its many goals for the new hub, it wants to “begin by destigmatizing mental illness and making resources available to our veterans and their families.”

Google has partnered with a number of different organizations and groups dedicated to helping veterans, noting “we hope that by combining the tools and skills of the private sector with the resources of government and veterans’ own unique perspectives, we can find even greater solutions.”

The Serving Veterans resource hub is not the first program Google has launched in support of veterans, the Google Veterans Network program was developed to “help solve challenges in the veterans community with Google products.” This also includes veteran employment and even spousal support, like career training and job opportunities.

Collectively Helping Veterans

Google’s new initiative joins many other veterans support efforts, including The American Legion, which has been serving veterans since 1919.

The American Legion offers a variety of resources including assistance in applying for and understanding VA benefits, education and career transition services, and more. The Legion also advocates for veterans issues like financial and educational assistance as well as improved access to better health care.

In its hundred-year history, The American Legion has been instrumental in the formation of a number of benefits veterans continue to enjoy today, like the establishment of the Veterans Bureau in 1921 (now the Department of Veterans Affairs) and the creation of the GI Bill of Rights signed by President Roosevelt in 1944.
