The Commission

The Media and Communications Commission (M&CC) Commission has an important responsibility to help with communications throughout the Department of California. Our Commissioners and Technical Advisors help support posts, districts, programs, and many department operations. The M&C Commission is involved in supporting key communication efforts throughout the department, including:

A Content Strategy Plan

The California Legionnaire is the official newsletter of the Department of California and a big responsibility of the Media & Communications Commission. A new content strategy plan is being developed.  Once approved by the Department Executive Committee (DEC), the new plan will begin. Here is a link to the proposed plan for your review.

The M&CC Commissioners

Media & Communications commissioners, before accepting the Department commander’s appointment shall agree to:

  • Each Area commissioner shall submit to the chair at least one report per quarter
  • The area commissioner shall conduct periodic Internet searches for news coverage of their posts and set up “Google Alerts” to send search results to their email address for easy monitoring
  • Commissioners should seek input from tech advisers and leadership from districts and posts to complete quarterly report which includes:
  • A brief mention of any media coverage your posts received (using the Media Tracking Database to draw from)
  • Examples of posts using their websites and social media to tell their stories

Technical Advisor Expectations:

  • Technical Advisors (TA) before accepting the M&C Commission Chair’s appointment shall agree to actively support the commission within their technical skill areas.
  • Provide general support for the commission as requested by the chair.

National Media & Communications Commission Resources

The M&CC Commission is a communications resource for posts and districts, helping with marketing, event fliers, PowerPoint presentations, press releases, Facebook, and websites.

Department Bylaws


MEDIA & COMMUNICATIONS: The editor of The California Legionnaire, appointed each year by the incoming Department Commander, shall serve on this Commission as the Commissioner from said editor’s Area of the Department of California. The mission of the Media & Communications Commission shall be to make recommendations on the content of internal and external communications, for the purpose of disseminating information and promoting a positive image of the Department of California. This commission will also develop press release templates, lists of media outlets, and other tools needed by Posts, Districts, and the department, for disseminating information to the media.
