Department Service Officer (DSO)

The American Legion, Department of California seeks a dedicated and passionate individual to join our team as a Department Service Officer (DSO). This is a unique opportunity to make a difference in the lives of veterans and their families by providing critical support and assistance.

The Department Service Officer oversees the operations of the Department Veteran Service Office Division. This position involves managing a team of seven to twelve paid Veteran Service Officers (VSOs) and coordinating the activities of three office locations. The DSO plays a crucial role in providing support and services to veterans, ensuring their needs are met, and assisting them in accessing the benefits and resources they deserve.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide guidance and assistance to veterans and their dependents in understanding and obtaining benefits available through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and other relevant agencies.
  • Assist individuals in completing paperwork and applications for various benefits and programs.
  • Conduct outreach to educate and inform veterans about available services and benefits.
  • Represent clients at hearings and meetings with government agencies as needed.

Requirements:

  • Honorably discharged veteran with a strong understanding of the military and veteran community.
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local laws and regulations about veterans’ benefits and services.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently, remotely, and as part of a team.
  • Strong organizational and administrative skills.
  • Proficient in using technology and various software applications.
  • Maintain accurate and detailed records of client interactions and case progress.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience working as a service officer or in a similar role advocating for veterans’ rights & benefits.
  • Accreditation as a service officer from the American Legion or another recognized organization.

Salary and Benefits:
The American Legion Department of California offers a competitive salary commensurate with experience and qualifications ($68,640.00 – $80,000.00 annually). Additionally, we provide a comprehensive benefits package, including health insurance, retirement plans, and paid time off.
