SB 888 by Senator Seyarto has been introduced this session, and the author is requesting support. Please see the following information regarding the measure.
BILL OVERVIEW:
SB 888 modifies how California calculates household income for disabled veterans seeking enhanced property tax exemptions. By excluding service-connected disability payments from income calculations, the bill makes it easier for disabled veterans to qualify for the larger $150,000 property tax exemption rather than the standard $100,000 exemption. This change is temporary: it applies only through January 1, 2037, when the amended section automatically repeals and the law reverts to its current definition of “household income” unless the Legislature takes action to extend or make the policy permanent.
WHAT THIS BILL CHANGES:
As currently written:
- Revenue and Taxation Code Section 205 — Excludes service-connected disability payments from household income calculations when determining eligibility for the enhanced $150,000 disabled veterans’ property tax exemption.
- Revenue and Taxation Code Section 205.5 — Applies the same service-connected disability payment exclusion to unmarried surviving spouses of disabled veterans seeking property tax exemptions.
- Revenue and Taxation Code cross-references — Corrects technical errors in statutory citations related to disabled veterans’ exemption provisions.
- Sunset provision — Specifies that these changes remain in effect only until January 1, 2037, at which point Section 205.5 as amended by SB 888 is repealed and a replacement Section 205.5, without the disability-payment exclusion, becomes operative.
CURRENT STATUS:
SB 888 was introduced and is currently assigned to the Senate Committee on Revenue and Taxation. No hearing date has been scheduled at this time, and the bill is in the early stages of the legislative process.

This would help a veteran be able to afford their home! I pray it will go through because it would help me and a lot of other disabled veterans!
Hello, I am a NVSO that helps Veterans. I like your plan but Senate Bill 296 is what all 100% disabled veterans deserve. No property tax. At least in this bill eliminate any income restrictions. Keep in mind that if a Disabled Veteran is 100% he either could have died for our country or he will die earlier than a non-Veteran. I see it way too often that I help the Veteran get 100% rated only to die with in a few years sometimes months. Vietnam Veterans with Agent Orange are especially at risk.
