Shawn Patterson, a U.S. Army Veteran and first responder, is set to embark on a 425-mile hike, known as the “2023 Legacy Challenge: Trek to Tribute,” in a display of dedication and remembrance to honor the legacy of two fallen heroes.

For Shawn Patterson, this is a deeply personal mission. During his first deployment to Afghanistan, Patterson tragically lost two close friends – U.S. Army Sergeant Tyler Holtz and Specialist Ricardo Cerros, Jr.

Holtz displayed remarkable courage, leading a charge into enemy territory before tragically losing his life. Cerros Jr.’s selflessness shone brightly as he shielded a wounded comrade from an enemy grenade. Tyler Holtz and Specialist Ricardo Cerros, Jr., both heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice, continue to inspire Patterson. Patterson’s mission is to commemorate not only Tyler and Ricardo but all who have given their lives in service to the nation.

Shawn Patterson’s mission with support from Legacies Alive, an organization dedicated to preserving the legacies of fallen heroes, seek to build lasting memorials in honor of these courageous service members. Legacies Alive’s mission is to ensure that the lives and characters of fallen soldiers are never forgotten.

Designed to test the limits of individuals both physically and mentally, Legacy Challenges bring national awareness of the mission of the organization, Legacies Alive, and the Challenger, Shawn Patterson.

Starting on September 24, the 12th anniversary of Tyler’s passing, Patterson will set out on a 425-mile journey from Dana Point to Salinas. The route will take him approximately 4 weeks through Los Angeles, Malibu, Santa Barbara, Pismo Beach, and many more cities.

By sharing the stories of Tyler and Ricardo, Shawn hopes to inspire gratitude for the freedoms enjoyed in the United States and appreciation for those who made them possible. Patterson seeks to immortalize the legacy of Holtz and Cerros Jr. and remind us all of the cost of freedom.
