SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO, Calif. — On Sunday, Nov. 1, members, supporters, and guests gathered at The Winston’s Club in San Juan Capistrano for “Smoke, Spirits & the Stars,” a special fundraising event held to benefit California American Legion Baseball.
The private club opened its doors for an exclusive afternoon designed to blend camaraderie, premium tastings, and dedicated support for youth athletics. Guests enjoying the Premium Rum & Cigar Experience were treated to guided pairings featuring the Ron Zacapa Rum Collection alongside hand-curated cigars, accompanied by food, hospitality, and an array of opportunity drawings and auctions.
Central to the gathering was the program’s core mission: investing in California’s young ballplayers through mentorship, sportsmanship, and high-level competition. Highlighting the afternoon was former Major League Baseball pitcher Jerry Spradlin, who spent time visiting with attendees and speaking about the enduring impact of Legion Baseball on his athletic career. Spradlin reflected on how competing in American Legion Baseball provided the discipline, competition, and foundation necessary to elevate his game to the collegiate and professional ranks.
Department leadership and program advocates were on hand to represent the Legion family and champion the cause. Key attendees included:
- Judy Leonardi, California American Legion Baseball Fundraising Technical Advisor
- Chris Yates, National Executive Committeeman
- Jeff Daly, Area 6 Vice Commander
- David Brambila, Junior Past Department Commander
Their presence underscored the unified commitment across district, area, and department levels to keep American Legion Baseball thriving across California.
Through events like “Smoke, Spirits & the Stars,” Legionnaires and community partners continue to ensure that local athletes have the resources, equipment, and tournament opportunities they need to develop both on and off the diamond. California American Legion Baseball extends its sincere appreciation to The Winston’s Club, event organizers, distinguished guests, and all attendees whose contributions help empower the next generation of players.
