The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs joined forces with Arthritis Foundation in 2021 to broaden access to essential care, education, and support for Veterans with arthritis.

Veterans and Service Members have higher rates of arthritis compared to the general population. Recognizing this challenge, the VA has made a commitment to ensure that Veterans with arthritis receive the necessary support to maintain a high quality of life.

Arthritis is a joint-related conditions, affecting people of all ages, races, and genders. With over 100 types, it is the leading cause of disability in the U.S. While commonly associated with aging, arthritis can impact individuals of all age groups.

Types of Arthritis

Osteoarthritis (OA)

Once considered wear-and-tear, OA is now understood as a joint disease causing inflammation and affecting bones and connective tissue. Lifestyle factors like poor diet and excess weight contribute to its prevalence.

Inflammatory Arthritis

Immune system overactivity characterizes this type, leading to the attack of healthy tissue, including joints. Early diagnosis and treatment are crucial, involving a combination of medications and a healthy lifestyle.

Infectious Arthritis

Triggered by infections, this type often responds well to antibiotics or antifungals.

Gout (Metabolic Arthritis)

Resulting from uric acid crystals buildup, gout is managed through medication and lifestyle changes.

Prevention and Management

Maintaining an active lifestyle, a healthy weight, and a diet low in inflammatory foods are key preventive measures. For those with mild symptoms, regular physical activity, hot/cold therapies, and over-the-counter pain relievers may suffice. Severe cases may require surgical solutions.

Accessing Resources for Veterans

Through the VA-Arthritis Foundation partnership, Veterans gain access to a wealth of resources, including walking programs like the Arthritis Foundation’s Walk with Ease. This community-based program encourages Veterans to adopt a more active lifestyle, emphasizing the FIT Formula for walking – Frequency, Intensity, and Time.

Virtual Support and Resources for Veterans

The Arthritis Foundation’s Live Yes! Connect Groups and VA’s virtual support groups create a sense of community among service members, fostering connections and offering education. Veterans are encouraged to engage in walking programs, which not only stimulate natural pain relief but also contribute to weight management, easing stress on joints.
