Lois Flint, Candidate for Area 2 Vice Commander

Lois Flint, Candidate for Area 2 Vice Commander

I am Lois Flint, the Commander of California’s 28th District of the American Legion. I oversee 12 Posts in the San Benito, Santa Cruz, and Monterey Counties, and I attend their events and partake in their meals as often as possible.  For two and a half years, I have enjoyed the learning experiences and the doors of opportunities that filled my heart with wonderful people and connected my calendar to my community.

I fell in love with the American Legion when I took the Basic Training Course. I joined Prunedale Post 593 and currently serve as the Post First Vice Commander, the Auxiliary Constitution & Bylaws Chair and Girls State Chair, the Sons Squadron guide to MyLegion.org, and the American Legion D28 Riders volunteer at the Laguna Seca Racetrack.

I served our country in the USMC in 1968-69 during the Vietnam Era. I did not have my boots on the ground over there, but I provided what the soldiers needed as a supply clerk from Camp Pendleton.  I met a wonderful Marine there and traded in my uniform for a wedding gown. We had fun traveling the nation with our two children as he became a Secret Agent for the Air Force Office of Special Investigations and I became a schoolteacher. But thirty years after he retired from the military, he succumbed to the effects of Agent Orange. That was 13 years ago, and I got busy.

I received Teacher of the Year Awards for Northern California and for the Salinas Valley for providing innovative learning environments in North Monterey County Unified School District. I was also awarded the Monterey County Veteran of the Year Medal.

At District 28, I was the Second Vice Commander in charge of Boys and Girls State and continue to chaperone delegates from D28, D13, and D8 to Sacramento State University. I completed the American Legion Basic Training, the California Legion College, some Tuesday Trainings, and the mandatory requirements for working with children.

I serve on many councils and committees to be able to answer my comrades’ questions.

  • Retired Soldiers Council Chaplain
  • United Veterans Council of Monterey County Board of Directors and Chaplain
  • Military and Veteran Affairs Commissioner to the Monterey County District 2 Supervisor.
  • Ft Ord Veterans Trail and Military Museum Chairperson
  • Blue Star Mothers member because my son retired from his service in the US Air Force and had been deployed during the Global War on Terror.
  • Twenty and Four Honor Society member because I am a female Legionnaire who holds an officer position in the American Legion.
  • Prunedale Lions Club Treasurer

When I am not at the Post or in meetings, I visit Veterans in hospitals and in nursing facilities and attend funerals at the Central Coast Veterans Cemetery at Fort Ord. I transport Veterans and elderly friends to appointments, activities, and to visit their families. I play pool on Tuesday nights, dance on Wednesday nights, and enjoy family time on Friday nights.

That may sound like I do enough, but Marine Corps General Al Gray said, “Do as much good as you can, for as long as you can, and for as many as you can.” I will bring enthusiasm into my service as your Area 2 Vice Commander because I am grateful for this opportunity to continue to serve God and my country and you.
