Foster Grandparent Program

The Fresno Economic Opportunities Commission’s Foster Grandparent Program is actively recruiting volunteers ages 55 and older in Fresno and Madera counties. This program enriches the lives of seniors and youth, and provides an opportunity for Veterans seeking a fulfilling way to contribute to their community.

The Foster Grandparent Program serves as a beacon of support for underserved infants, children, and teens throughout Fresno and Madera Counties. Senior volunteers play a role in providing one-to-one mentoring and emotional support. This not only promotes literacy and academic success but also contributes significantly to the social-emotional and cognitive-behavioral development of the young participants.

Veterans, with their wealth of life experiences and dedication to service, can find a fulfilling role as Foster Grandmas or Grandpas. This program recognizes the values and perspectives Veterans bring, fostering a supportive environment for both the seniors and the youth involved. The program carefully matches each senior volunteer with a young person who will benefit the most from a volunteer’s attention and life wisdom.

Beyond the positive impact on youth, the Foster Grandparent Program places a strong emphasis on enhancing the quality of life for seniors. As these Grandparents extend love, wisdom, and dedicated time to mentor and nurture young individuals who may lack such guidance, they, in turn, experience a rewarding sense of purpose and self-worth. The reciprocal nature of the program creates a fulfilling cycle of mutual support and growth.

For Veterans interested in becoming a Foster Grandparent, the application and enrollment process is federally regulated and involves four steps:

Step 1: A pre-screening interview confirms eligibility and addresses any questions potential Grandparent volunteers may have.

Step 2: Prospective volunteers attend a group informational meeting, complete the Foster Grandparent Program Application and Volunteer Questionnaire, and provide required compliance documents, such as a valid California ID. Individual interviews are scheduled to discuss responses provided on the Volunteer Questionnaire.

Step 3: Prospective volunteers must pass a physical screening by their primary health care provider, verifying their clearance to volunteer with youth.

Step 4: A background check is initiated, and upon a clearance notification, a 3-day orientation is scheduled, along with 20 hours of field training at a volunteer site.

This process ensures the safety and suitability of volunteers, setting the stage for impactful and enriching interactions between generations, including the valuable contributions of Veterans.

In addition to the eligibility criteria, senior volunteers must possess a positive outlook on life, enthusiasm, and compassion. In return for their dedication, Veterans and other volunteers receive a tax-exempt stipend, a transportation allowance, and the flexibility to contribute up to 40 hours per week. Paid time off hours are also available.
